ABSTRACT
In our study, it was aimed to identify the characteristics and the rates of
poisoning among the forensic cases that applied to the emergency service and to define the precautions for reducing the number
of the poisoned cases.
The emergency service patient evaluation forms of Forensic cases that applied
to the emergency service of the Suleyman Demirel University, School of Medicine Hospital, during the period of four years
(01.01.1999-31.12.2002) were retrospectively investigated. Their ages, gender, application times, the poisoning origins and
the rates were searched.
Total number of the cases that applied to the emergency service in the four-year-period
was 29140. The number of the poisonings was 361 (1.2 %). Among these, 228 were females (63.2 %), 133 were (36.8 %) males.
The most seen age group was 0-10 ages with 103 cases (28.53 %). The application times generally accumulated in the summer
season (125 cases).
The main purpose of getting the toxic substance was committing suicide (221
cases). Among 361 poisoned cases, the common poisoning origin was the drug usage with 214 cases (59.28 %).
