EVALUATION OF PRESCHOOL PERIOD
TOXICITY CASES

ABSTRACT
In this study, it was aimed to evaluate 0-6 year’s old, preschool period
toxicity cases who admitted to the Emergency Department of Süleyman Demirel University Medical School Hospital according
to their age, sex and the cause of toxicity and to clarify the features and distribution of this age group toxicity cases
in accordance with the literature.
In our study, Case Report Forms of 1602 cases who admitted to the Emergency
Department between 1999-2002 were investigated retrospectively, and 92 toxicity cases in 0-6 years old group were evaluated.
The cases of this age group were %5.74 of the forensic cases who admitted to the Emergency Department between these years.
42 (45.65%) of the cases were girl and 50 (54.35%) of the cases were boys. When
the cause of toxicity was concerned, it was established that drug toxicity with 35 (38.04%) of the cases was in the first
place, drinking corrosive agent with 31 (33.70%) of the cases, toxicity with mouse poison and toxicity with insecticides
10 (10.87%) of the cases in each were following respectively.
We observed that the incidence of toxicity cases was maximum in summer with
36 (39.13%) of the cases and was minimum in winter with 16 (17.39%) of the cases
during these years.
