ABSTRACT
Objective: In this present study, we attempted to assess frequency and location
of intracranial hemorrhages in cases of perinatal child death as well as possible etiological factors. Material and Methods:
For this purpose, e examined autopsy reports of a total of 246 perinatal death cases autopsied in Mortuary Section of Forensic
Medicine Council. We further evaluated medical and other relevant records in 40 (16.3%) cases with intracranial bleeding.
Results: 8 (20%) were, still birds and 32 (80%) were life birds. as determined by autopsy in this 40 cases. Trauma had be-en
inflicted in-utero in 1 case, during labor in 7 cases and in 9 postnatal periods. In 8 cases prolonged labor was the cause
of the intracranial hemorrhage. Where as, bleeding was precipitated by maternal and/or fetal pathological factors in 7 cases.
In evaluation other findings in 8 cases without apparent etiological factor, we assumed that intracranial bleeding" was caused
by intrauterine trauma in 2 and postnatal traumatic impact in 6 cases. Conclusion: Respectively or findings show that birth
management must be performed in held care units and more meticulously furthermore a revision of the respective paragraph at
the Turkish penal code dealing with infanticide would be recommendable.
Key words: Perinatal deaths, intracranial hemorrhages, autopsy.
